Emily
Written by: Sarah Valade

After my parents had the 1929 bedroom set they purchased at an auction refurbished and set up in my room they wondered why I told them I didn’t like it. I was seven at the time and had been asking them for a big girl bedroom set to replace the toddler one I was still using for almost a year. The solid mahogany set of a bed, dresser, and vanity seemed like a perfect find. However, they didn’t know that they had also brought home the previous owner of the set.

I had always seen those who have passed on. It is a talent that runs in my family. My Great-Grandmother was the medium of her town when she was alive. She helped families finish business that may have been left by their loved ones. She also helped those stuck to cross over.

The first memory that I have of seeing someone who had passed on was my little brother when I was two. After that it was not uncommon for my mother to find me talking to people that she could not see. It was different with the woman who came with the furniture. She never left like the others who had passed through or the relatives that came back for the occasional visit.

After a couple of days of sneaking out of my room to sleep on the couch I decided to ask her why she never left. This was my bed now and I thought she should leave. Her name was Emily and she said that she had died in the bed and that it had been a wedding present. She didn’t know why she couldn’t leave.

I told my mother about this and she decided to call over a family friend and psychic Anne Miller. She explained to me that sometimes people get stuck when they die and couldn’t get to where they were going. She asked Emily if she would like help crossing over. Emily said no.

For years I bonded with Emily, she became like a second mother to me. As I grew up she would tell we what she thought of my friends, my choices in clothes and the people I was dating. And, she would let others know when she didn’t like them by tuning on radios, making the temperature in the room drop and hanging up on them when we were on the phone.

When I went to college my mother said that she would always know when I was coming home for a visit even if I didn’t call first. Emily would set all the pictures hanging on the walls in our house at a skew angle. Every time I came home she would tell me that she missed me. Eventually she wanted to cross over and be with her loved ones. She said that the house was not the same without someone to talk to.

She still comes and visits me. And, she still makes sure to alert my mother every now and then when I try to make a surprise visit home. I have come in contact with many spirits over the years but none have been such an enduring part of my life as Emily.
